Bridge of Weir, a large village, once known as Port of Weir, is situated approximately 14 miles west of Glasgow, is noted for its leather and cotton production but is today a popular holiday destination with golf and fishing facilities. The cotton mills were established in the 1790s-1840s on the River Gryffe. The Weir was a dam or fence crossing the River Gryffe used to trap salmon, making it easier for the locals to catch them. The seats in the House of Commons and the House of Lords were renewed in 1989 using leather produced in the village.
Notable buildings include Castle Terrace (1882 by Robert Raeburn and formerly the Ranfurly Hotel), St.Machar’s Church (1877-78), and Ranfurly Castle (15th century) which was built for the Knox family and is one of Bridge of Weir’s two golf courses - Ranfurly Castle Golf Course, the other being Old Ranfurly Golf Club.
The village can be easily accessed by either road or bus, and is in close proximity to Scotland’s leading and largest airport Glasgow International Airport and is ideally located for the M8 motorway and Glasgow City Centre. North Ayrshire is also closeby as well as the Clyde coastline & Loch Lomond.
